Okay so I am working on my Sister/B-in-laws network. They switched internet to Qwest with an Actiontec w/ Wireless Gateway. They have 2 Linksys routers for Vonage a 3Com 24 port switch and a Server. Okay so most of their workstations are going to be using Wireless. If I plug the Actiontec into port 1 of the switch, the ethernet light will not come on for either the modem or switch. If I plug it into a router and the router to port 1 on the switch, it works. The problem is I can’t get the modem to DHCP anything on the switch even though I turn off DHCP on the router. Therefore the wireless WS can’t communicate with the Server. So I hook up from modem to wireless router to switch port one. Problem solved except they need people to access the server over the internet via IIS. Okay so I port forward 80 on the router to the static IP I gave the server. Nope. I port forward 80 to the router too from the modem. Nope. AHHHHHHHHHHH! What the heck. It would be so easy if I could get the modem directly connected to the switch but it will not work. Anyone know why this wouldn’t work? I’m a student by the way and so this is really my first hands on experience with networking, other than simple home networking. Thanks in advance.
