welcome screen errors

By matsho ·
I have a WinXP system with multiple users. One of the users has a displaying "1 unread message" appearing on the welcome screen for a hotmail email. I have manually checked and found no unread messages through the following programs:

-outlook express
-microsoft outlook
-windows messenger
-hotmail messenger
-hotmail (visited through IE browser)

As stated above, there are NO UNREAD MESSAGES, yet a "1 unread message" appears on the welcome screen.

There are two ways to correct this issue:

1. Download and install TweakUI for Windows Xp
2. Edit the Registry directly

Preferably you'll want to use TweakUI's Repair feature to correct this problem. On the GUI in the left-hand pane select Repair. In the right pane in the drop down list select, "Unread mail count", and click Repair Now.

TweakUI for Windows XP can be download from Microsoft at:

The second option (Regedit) can get a little dicey, so do be careful and do a full backup of your registry before proceeding.

Go to Start | Run. Type: regedit.exe and click OK.
In the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive navigate to:

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\"email address in question". In the right pane double-click MessageCount and set the value to 0. Click OK and close Regedit.

<<You may have to reboot or logoff to effect this change>>
