The well known ports are a security risk as they are typically uniform around the world. For example TCP port 80 is HTTP (internet), TCP port 25 is SMTP (email). If somebody found a flaw wihtin these particular "well known ports" they could execute an attack over a theorectically world wide network (the internet). Any open port on the external interface is another vector to attack.
