Well... the "Take your gun to work -day" blog did it.

Since that thread got started, for the first time since the update, post counts have been approaching and even surpassing the average post count for the month preceding the update.
Then : 9000
Now : 10000

This is how newspapers get tempted to tabloideze pot shots. Crap sells.

Thought.

I think you'll find most of the posts are opposed to the original article's position. This 'crap' wouldn't sell if, like a newspaper, it was actually being sold.

Incidentally, where did you get your stats? I'd like to see what this month looks like compared to last September, not last December / January.

I collected the stats and extrapolated for the first month after D-day

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Thought.

The thread I used for collecting the data was called "Mark Twain", it may be googlable, still. EDIT: Here it is http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/103-341060
It dropped monotonously from 9k to 4,5k... later growing to around 7k +/-500
I know those people are opposed, but if you count it, the 1200+ posts of "that thread" don't by themselves account fully for the jump in monthly posts (which I estimate to be around 3000 +/-500).
That means 2k posts unaccounted for.

The debacle underlined TR's relevance. People would not have bothered protesting if TR was not relevant, and apparently some people stuck around for other pursuits.

Ok, the grammar thread and the technology thread both added something, too, but I don't think it's enough. Could also be that the recent bug fixes have increased people's ability to post. That could have something to do with it too.

Anyway, I mostly wanted to announce the fact that status is now at pre-D-day levels. Sign of the apocalypse perhaps?

With hindsight...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Well... the "Take your gu ...

I think the massive traffic and twittering surrounding the mentioned blog may have bounced TR's "Relevance score" up where the spammers really take notice.
Didn't it start getting worse just then?

Yes

by NickNielsen In reply to With hindsight...

It did.

So, since the thread was in response to Toni's article, does that mean it's Toni's fault?

That depends...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Yes

will teasing Toni about it be fun?

No

by NickNielsen In reply to That depends...

Probably not...

Then we should blame someone more fun.

After all, it's only fair to punish the baker in the blacksmith's stead.

Stale.
About how to find stuff on TR : just put the following string in your url field:
[pre]g [keyword] [keyword] [keyword] site:www.techrepublic.com[/pre]

That is, google TR for it.
