The turkey's a bit dry, but otherwise it has all the ingredients of a 500+ post slug-fest :)

Seemed kind of dull to me...

Other than it annoys me they make so much money...

Explain this to me...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Seemed kind of dull to me ...

What kind of money are we talking about, and what kind of people?

But the point is not how much money they make

by JamesRL In reply to Seemed kind of dull to me ...

Its how much money they could make if these companies were actually competing for these staff instead of colluding to keep the job hopping and the wage increases that goes with that from happening.

That's sort of self-limiting, I believe.

by AnsuGisalas In reply to But the point is not how ...

Collusion isn't necessary. A company can easily decide to enforce the same policy on their own, not making counter-offers and not cold-calling other companies' employees. It will not create a devastating brain-drain.
Especially not if the company focuses on keeping their employees motivated, otherwise.

I hate that phrase

by jck In reply to That's sort of self-limit ...

"Motivating your employees"

Most places I've worked, that was making your employees feel belittled and telling them that if they didn't work the non-compensated overtime that you'd just go out and find someone else to do it.

BTW: 17 years as a software professional, and I just got my first job programming where I am compensated hourly. If they want me to work overtime, they have to pay me for my work.

It's nice to get off at 5pm everyday, and know that if they want something done that night that they have to pay me overtime or give me time-and-a-half comp time off later.

And yes, I am enjoying my new job. First job I've really enjoyed since 2004.

Ok, scratch that...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to I hate that phrase

I wasn't aware of that connotation, sorry!
Replace with "keeping their employees happy"...

But great to hear that you've gotten a job where they don't "motivate" you

500+?

by NexS In reply to Well this is a promising ...

You think?
Unless we have some OZ-type engineers in here who are ****-bent on defending the outrageous amounts of money these bidded-over employees get offered, I could imagine that it would be quite one-sided.

For reasons none other than where you hail.
