Looking for a wep key viewer that my company can use to check all the keys on our laptops. Anyone have any suggestions?

FISHY?!?

Fishy, when I just finished sitting in the conference room with the corporate president, operations manager and supervisor discussing all the problems we have because the idiots before my supervisor and I (he’s been here 1 year, me 3 days!)didn’t stick to the same standards. My supervisor is the first I.S. guy they’ve had full time in 25 years.

yes, Fishy!

You do not need to scan all of the systems to get encryption keys from everyone.
Send an email to everyone stating how they will need to connect, and where to get a new key from.
what you are asking for is SW that can be used in an improper way, whether you have a valid reason or not. We will not help for this

besides
by cg it · about 16 years, 8 months ago
In reply to yes, Fishy!
you won’t just get a single wep key, you’ll get all keys that the users have saved which could be their home wireless networks as well.
WEP encryption has been successfully hacked is a short time frame[see George OUs article], so, most in the know now use WPA.
Besides, you ought to know what wireless computers are allowed on the network and have documented them along with taking the necessary security by using MAC address filter list.

Software “used in an improper way”…
by jim · about 16 years, 8 months ago
In reply to yes, Fishy!
I agree that the Phil shouldn’t waste his time trying to open the network to whatever keys the EU’s are already using. The IT dept. sets the security standards and it’s up to the user to conform to it! (IMHO)
BUT… if we limit our discussions to SW that CAN’T “be used in an improper way” we’ll have very little to talk about!

You Don’t need it.

If the WEP is setup and the laptop can connect it is the right key.
As stated earlier, you really should change them all to WPA if possible. -

Scrap it all and start fresh
by jdclyde · about 16 years, 8 months ago
In reply to WEP key viewer
There isn’t a valid reason to backwards engineer this when it isn’t a modern config anyways.
Develop a new strategy using current encryption and scrap the old.
If your request is legit, you will see this as the best route to take. If it isn’t, you will continue to try to get a “viewer” to try to crack into someone elses system.

It is always easier to start fresh than it is to try to figure out what someone did wrong and try to fix it.
I kind of get the feel that you were still more interested in getting your hands on this viewer though.

my boss found a program and we’ve already got half the compound straightened out. It’s easier to start fresh if you are not very good at your job. If you are good at your job, you can take what is thrown at you and come up with apple pie!
Thanks for nothing, “techrepublic”

Ending up with a rotten pie is what you get

Can you catch every little thing the previous techs could have done wrong? No.
Are you feeling proud that you are using an old, insecure protocol instead of having pride in your work and updating to a more current technology? Sure looks that way.
There is a big difference between getting something to work and doing the job right. You got it to work, but are a far cry from doing the job right.
Your welcome, even if you decided not to follow sound advice to give you a current and stable environment. When it bites you in the ass a year from now, you have no one to blame but yourself for not having the work ethic of desiring a job well done. Wep is fine, for a home setup where it just doesn’t matter.

Is this all you do? You know nothing about where I work and nothing about anything else I am involved with. I think you need to get back to work and stop wasting your companys time posting useless comments about things you know nothing about.

JD’s comments were based on the info you provided. And it seems that he has done a good job assessing everything.
If you are not smart enough to take good advice, you will not last too long in this field.
Maybe instead of posting here you should get back to work and try to fix all of the other issues that are abound.

“I think you need to get back to work and stop wasting your companys time posting useless comments about things you know nothing about.”
If you are going to do a half-assed job at securing (or failing miserably to secure) your company’s network, then perhaps it’s YOU who are posting useless comments about things you know nothing about.
Take out a loan and buy a clue, junior.

Better keep your resume updated
by jdclyde · about 16 years, 8 months ago
In reply to A waste of time
With your sloppy and half-assed approach to doing your job, you will be looking for employment soon.
You can do it right or you can do it again. Some day you will learn this, but it is clear your pride is stopping you from learning it the easy way. You will learn it though, one way or another.
If I do not have enough information to properly address the situation, it would again be completely your fault for your inability to properly communicate the situation.
Remember, it was you that came here with your hat in your hand asking for free advice. Crying because you don’t like the answer is in very poor form on your part. In this line of work, you give people what they need, not what they want. When they are inexperienced (as you are) what you want is rarely the right thing.
The only thing I DO need to know is your trying to do a half ass job with outdated technology instead of wiping the slate and doing it right.
Or you were trying to get a hack tool.
Either way, your just being a whinnyasstittybaby, and are now nothing but a source of amusement for everyone gathering around watching the dumb kid run his mouth, showing his ignorance.
Enjoy the unemployment line.

Your Welcome.

For a demonstration of the caution you should be exercising regarding the security of your network.
You say you have only been their 3 days and your boss has been there 1 year.
Obviously somebody has recently left.
Its time to change the keys and upgrade your level of security while your at it.
Especially if the former IT personnel are “dis-gruntled” employees.
You ARE changing the server passwords etc?

Cobblers like him make us all look bad
by jdclyde · about 16 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Your Welcome.
People see that obviously ANYONE can do this, if he can and get something to seem to work. Of course his boss and coworkers won’t know the difference between seeming to work and being set properly.
Doing a halfass job makes us all look unprofessional. Any job that is worth doing is worth doing correctly. This dumb kid will learn that after being fired a few times.

this dumb kid is older and alot smarter than you, jerk. I’ve been a member of techrepublic since 1998, and it’s “helpful” comments from people like you, accusing, ignorant comments, that drive people away. I feel sorry for this place with people like you around for help

maybe he will join the disgruntled lot and keep the wi-fi unsecure! Then complain that it was his boss’s fault for not telling him to do it right!
Oh, I can see the virus problem building up, along with plent-o-spyware. I wonder if their HR employees connect through it and look up peoples personal info???

the best part about this whole episode is that I am not only older than you, I know by your responses that I am definitely more honest and a whole lot more competent at what I do than any one of you wonderful “professionals”. You have no idea.
