What 64-Bit OS to use (Vista, XP Pro or Ubuntu)

    Hi,

I’m about buying a Dell D630 with Intel? Core? 2 Duo T9500 (2.60GHz) 6M L2 Cache and 4GB RAM. What is the best OS to install to have maximum access to the 4GB RAM? I’m considering Windows XP Pro 64-bit, Windows Vista Business 64-Bit and Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

      Any 64-bit OS should do

Any 64-bit operating system should be able to address and use that much memory. I’ve not heard many good things about the 64-bit version of XP so I won’t recommend it. If you’re concerned about performance, I would say Ubuntu would be your best bet if you have experience with it.

        Hi SAJChurchey,

Thanks for kind response. I’m a novice with Linux generally but I’ve tried it and willing to learn it. However the big challenge is that most of my nettworking tools (Solarwinds, Kiwi CatTools,Cisco Tools) run on Windows alone. Do you advise that I install Ubuntu as the host OS and run Win Xp/Vista 64-bit as VM?
