What are some qualitites of POS system?

There are many POS systems available in the market for restaurants, retail stores, etc but what makes them useful? What are the features in simple terms? I think this software is a waste of money but I am ready to learn the features by which I can overturn my thinking.

Returns, refunds and store credit features.

Well, basically it’s a https://www.google.com/search?q=cash+register . If something like that is all your shop or restaurant needs to keep track of products sold and money received, use that in stead of a computer.
