We have deployed many types of servers in our organization like mail server,proxy server,profile server etc.We want to monitor the health of all the servers and so are intersted in knowing the reasons why these servers breakdown..anybody knowing about specific server can also help

Hi, I can give you the general reasons for hardware failures (barring manufacturing defects): the environment! Too much heat and variations in the power supplied to the equipment. Deployment must take into consideration the requirements of adequate cooling (including appropriate air volume) and “Uninterruptible” (and filtered) power supply. These things will have more effect on your server’s long life than almost anything else you could do!

Server software breakdowns (that aren’t caused by a hardware problem) are much harder to predict, but I would guess that prevention of outside “attacks” would be at the top of the list. (Right behind having a professionally installed and administered system, of course!)
