Don't know what you mean by having win98 "stored" on your pc. Does this mean that what you have on your pc is an "image" or what? If it's an "image" then just extract the image to a cd and perform the install. If not, then explain what you mean having win98 "stored".

If you just saved the "system" folder, it won't work. Creating an image won't allow you to perform an installation.

If you don't have the I386 folder from the installation CD on your PC, you are screwed. You will have to find another installation disk. You the system folder (I assume you mean the C:\Windows folder?) is only the files needed for Windows to run, not the files for installation.

Sorry... That should be the Win98 folder from the installation CD for Windows 98. I386 is Win2K.

So you have copied the Win98 folder from the CD

to your hardisk...!! right..?

and that is on you PC.....

If you have a CD Burning software on you PC

with a CD-writer...then Just Burn that folder

onto a CD.....

and then use that CD in you Laptop to install...

But there are Legality Issues involved.....

If you have the additional licience to use it...

then you can install it on your laptop using

that cd....

Now if you do not have ....a CD writer on your PC

...then you will need to connect your Laptop to

your PC...and then transfer that folder containing

win98 on it..and then run setup from there.

hope it helps.

Aqaurius gave enough information that you should succeed with his advice. Many laptops had the MS Product Key placed on the bottom. Some where placed under the battery. With Win98, some did not do this at all. This is all that is needed to be legal when installing from the cab files.
Should your laptop not have the Product Key placed on it, there is still hope. This is provided that your laptop still has Win98 installed and is bootable to the desktop. Should this be the case, then you can run REGEDIT and record the Product Key that is stored in the regesitry. The path is - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION - Under this key, in the right hand pane, you will find the Product Key that you need. Simply write it down and this is the key needed for the installation. Take extra care that you record the Product Key correctly.

I hope this helps you.

Sometimes, when Windows is installed, the setup files (the *.cabs) are copied to the hard drive. Often they reside in C:\windows\options\cabs. If these files are present and you have the CD key then you can copy these files to your laptop and run the installation from there simply by typing 'setup' from a command prompt.
