What causes the cursor to jump?

By jwa ·
I have a user with an HP 900 notebook with WinNT 4.0. When she is using MS Outlook 98, she reports that the cursor (insertion point) skips back. For example, she can be typing in the body of the message and the cursor will skip back to one of the header fields (TO:, CC:, Subject).

I have another user with Windows 98 on a Dell Latitude notebook who experiences a similar problem when typing in Word 97. The cursor will jump back to a location, frequently in the middle of a sentence of a previous paragraph.

Any ideas about what causes the cursor to jump, or better, how to make it stop?

Thanks in advance.

- Jack

Since both instances you have mentioned are regarding laptops, the logical place to look would be at what pointing device are your users using. Are they using the built in trackball, pointer, or touchpad, or are they using an attached mouse.

If the device is the attached mouse, I would look closely at the driver you have loaded for it.

That is the only common point between the two machines, two different applications, and two different operating systems.

Bought a batch of cheap miceperhaps?

I suspect you are correct. As it turns out, both have touchpads. I called HP, one of the hardware vendors involved, and they have finally concluded that it is probably a bad touchpad.

If they both have touchpads on their notebooks, perhaps they accidentally touch the touchpad with the back of their palms while typing.
