What do I do if my computer says “Cannot Read Disk” when I boot it?

Ok, so, I’m a girl that doesn’t know that much about computers, so please be nice and stupid-down the answers 😀
The problem is that since yesterday, for no apparent reason at all, my computer, when I boot it, says “Cannot Read Disk, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to Restart”, and I do, and it does the same thing over and over until I just start yelling at it. I have been advised to hit my computer, but i’m not fond of violence.
Is there any way to fix my computer? Is it dead? If I can, how would I do it? And would buying an external drive fix the problem for now so I could just use it for whatever I need (like typing boring papers)?
