What do I need to become a trainer?

    Locked

    by jsaltzman ·

I am thinking on the lines of becoming a trainer. I have 8 years hardware experience, managed a student computer lab (designed basic training sessions in WP 6,0, Excel, and PowerPoint) for 3 yrs, am now a Lan Specialist responsible for a Novell 4.2server and Nt 4 server with 50+ users. I am an MCP with 4 more tests to go.

What do I need to do to become a trainer? I do not have a degree.

    Thanks!!

Hi, depends on what kind of trainer you want to be. For example, if a trainer for hardware, you should keep up with A+ tests (TIAcomp.org)so you would have a clear understanding of the tests if training people to be A+ certified. If you want to be certified for software (excel, access, etc>)look at the MOUS certification (www.microsoft.com). If MCSE, an MCT (microsoft certified trainer)-must be an mcse and fulfill microsoft’s procedures listed on their website (and of course, mcse for 4.0 is valid only until Dec., 2000)or you could specialize in novell (wwww.novell.com). Check out the different requirements and talk with training centers and community colleges to see what they expect. The latter may be very interested in your experience thus far. It’s a good starting point as you finish your tests. Good luck.

My own experience is that you will first and foremost need to have a desire to train. In other words a passion for the training experience as well as the course content itself.
Other traits (if you are a natural) or skills (if you want to becomea natural) are:
      Presentation
      Patience
      Communication
Crowd control (command of the group)
Familiartity with training tools such as projectors, Powerpoint presentations, classroom setup.
I would suggest a training 101 course which would provide you with the tools to train. From there you may want to take an instructional design course.
      Good luck!

I just recently became a trainer after two years of technical writing and 17 years in the trenches as an administrative assistant. I don’t have a degree either and that made me nervous (like it seems to bother you a little too). I think the best thing you can do is exhibit a love a learning. If you like to learn, you’ll be able to share that love of learning with your students. If you’ve got that, you can learn the other stuff. There are lots of technical colleges and corporations that need good trainers and the degree isn’t the primary area of interest for them. You just have to be able to get your point across in a clear and interesting way. I guess next to a love of learning a bit of creativity helps. I started giving little prizes away in my class. It got the participants excited (over a kazoo, squirt gun, mini koosh balls, toy cars, etc.). It got them involved with their fellow participants and it added something different to their training experience. It shows that I care aboutthem (I also furnish
