What do you use for tracking work pipeline?

Do you use Excel? Do you use MS Project to keep track of individual project plans in the one spot? Is there some other tool out there? I am trying to be able to create and easily update a pipeline view of all pending work that does not necessarily have confirmed start dates but trying to be able to do some resource mapping and project scheduling. I currently have a master project plan in which I insert the indivigual projects plans with guestimate dates (sometimes quite arbitrary and often clashing with other such entries) & I just find it quite time consuming and soul destroying to have to modify date fields on all the project entries when all I want is to be able to do is slide a block of time around wen start dates become more solid or push out etc. Admittedly I am no MS Project expert – am I missing something in MS Project or is there some other tool out there better suited to the job?
