What does a person in DB Admin do?

By billy34 ·
Hi Everybody
I could use some help. Having just been laid off, I am looking to go back to school. Having done some research it appears database administration is something that appears promising to pursue. However, not knowing anyone in the field, I am at a loss to find out what one does in the course of a day's work. I could really use some help in this area. I have also been advised to take some Unix classes also. I am seriously considering the Oracle course offered at a nearby school. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on the organization but

a database admin in most organizations is reponsible for designing a solid database structure(schema), making sure that performance is optimised, and making sure data is secure, both from corruption and unauthorized access.

You need to know an OS, and most large scale databases are still unix based, though NT/Win2000 is catching up. You need to know one of the major databases(Oracle, IBM's DB2, Informix).

Good luck.

James
