What is a "Butterfly test"?

By Mr Thompson ·
This is a question from an IT TAFE course I am completing. The subject is 'Diagnostic Software'. My suspicion is that it relates to a loop back test. Any feedback would be much appreciated. (I have been unable to find an answer elsewhere on the Web!)

What is a "Butterfly test"?

The closest thing I know of is a Butterfly Seek Test. It is used in PC diagnostics to test the actual mechanics of a hard drive (seeking low, seeking high), whereas mere random and sequential seeks just test the platters in the drive. Hope this helps.

"butterfly " test is a test given to a floppy or hard drive which makes the heads seek to the fullest range randomly, giving the effect (if you could see it) of the heads flapping from extreme to extreme and giving a fluttering noise, hence "butterfly" this is a very useful test of the speed of a drive at the worst case senario. Is this any help? Do you think you could write a programme that could do this function? as these are the kind of things you may need for this exam.
