what is boot partition/system partition

By harvardd ·
What are the files that go on a boot partition?
Also, what files go on a system partition?

What would you put the boot files and system files on two different partitions?

Thanks

what is boot partition/system partition

by bart777 In reply to what is boot partition/s ...

The Boot partition is where the OS goes, and the system partition is where the files required to start the machine reside.(Like the boot.ini file)

Some people like to put the OS on another partion than the C drive. This is often the case in a dual boot computer. The C drive is may have Win9x and the D drive may have NT/2K. Other people have a C drive that is too small to hold the new Os.

Hope this helps... By the way those are the MS definitions for the partitions. Some other OS's reverse the nomenclature.

The definition can be confusting because its origin goes back to the use of the ARC convention in the boot.ini file which were systems using the alfa processor.

System Partition [Q100525]
----------------

The system partition refers tothe disk volume containing hardware
specific files needed to boot Windows NT (NTLDR, BOOT.INI, and so on).
On Intel x86-based machines, it must be a primary partition that has
been marked active. On x86 machines, this is always drive 0, the drive
the system BIOS searches during system boot for the operating system.

Boot Partition
--------------

The boot partition contains the Windows NT operating system files
(usually \WINNT) and it support files (usually \WINNT\SYSTEM32). It
canbe the same partition as the system partition.

In the days of Windows NT 4.0 I might have put the boot partition on a smaller fat partition so I could get at it with a dos boot disk, and the system partion on a NTFS drive for security. If I ever needed to edit the boot.ini file, I could always use a dos disk. Disks being cheap these days and the tools provided with Windows 2000 make, in my opinion this no longer a valid way of configuration.
