what is perception and reality?

I am designing a software for a friend but his ideas about my software are not in line with what i have put into the development of the software.
My question is how does perception and reality come into software design?

Is what you want and reality is what you get.

It's like 42 which is the answer to Life the Universe and Everything.

If you do not first understand the question the answer doesn't make any sense.

However with any software design you need very tight Requirements well listed before you begin so that there can be fewer misunderstandings that the person paying the bills gets.

Your requirements document, which you and your friend need to agree on, should detail exactly what the software is going do do, what the screens look like, and how it works. Your friend should sign off on this document before you code anything.

If there are misunderstandings, it is because this step has not been performed correctly.
