The encryption supported by the OS’es you want to use to read (and modify?) the encrypted storage device. Like Bitlocker in Windows.

Be very careful not to lose the password. Without it everything on it is gone. That’s why we recommend to always have an unencrypted backup copy of all data it contains.

You didn’t give any criteria so how to answer.

Imagine if you asked for encryption that can’t be broken. So far “any encryption can be broken.” So that can’t be your criteria.

Encrypt the drive with a Quantum Computer

That will at the moment prevent anyone else reading the data on it and if you do not use the same Quantum Computer to attempt to read the drive latter it will probably be safe from that as well.

Down side is that if you use a different OS or version of the encryption Software whatever computer you use will also probably be unable to read the drive and just give you Gibberish so it’s best not to encrypt drives securily unless you have a Legal Need to do so and the resources to make sure you can read it latter.

The best encryption method depends on your needs, but AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) 256-bit is widely considered the most secure option for encrypting storage devices. It is used by government agencies, financial institutions, and cybersecurity experts due to its strong encryption strength and resistance to brute-force attacks.

For full-disk encryption, BitLocker (Windows), FileVault (Mac), and VeraCrypt (cross-platform) are excellent choices. If you’re looking for encrypted external storage, many modern SSDs and USB drives come with built-in hardware encryption.

Encryption is especially important when dealing with sensitive financial data. Whether you’re securing personal files or business-related financial data, strong encryption is a must to protect against cyber threats.

AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) – A widely used, strong encryption method (AES-256 is the most secure).
BitLocker – A built-in Windows encryption tool using AES for full-disk encryption.
VeraCrypt – Open-source software offering robust encryption for drives and partitions.
      FileVault – macOS’s built-in full-disk encryption using XTS-AES-128 with a 256-bit key.
LUKS (Linux Unified Key Setup) – A strong encryption standard for Linux systems.

256-bit AES encryption is the best for securing any storage device because it’s strong and efficient. You can encrypt your files with BitLocker (Windows), FileVault (Mac), or VeraCrypt (cross-platform). Make sure you use strong passwords and encrypt your whole drive.
