    What is the Best IT Departament Organiza

    In a small Manufacturing Company, One site location, ERP system installed, 50 – 70 IT users what is the best Organization for an IT Departament?

      Well, there is always the answer, “it depends”. Though this is not very helpful or satisfying, it is often the case in a small organization like this, where individually skilled people, inter-departmental expectations and relationships are important. Here are the principles that I have applied in the past:

      1) Keep it flat. De-emphasize hierarchy and title and emphasize roles and responsibilities.

      2) Plan to change. No organization model is perfect forever and no set of people will remain where they are over time. Leadership of the organization needs to keep things flexible and set the tone.

      3) Organize to address current needs. Since the org and company will change, don’t look for the “ideal” organization. Look at where you have problems, gaps, poor perceptions, or business imperatives and organize to best address them. It’s a lot easier to explain a change in org to address a problem than to meet an ideal.

      4) Include the business. Take off the IT blinders and build your key business

      The business decides who gets new PC’s and who gets hand-me-downs annually.

      IT specs the machines (with business feedback)and buys them – 1/3 or 1/4 replacement per year depending on business.

      Spec top of the line machines (or near top).

      A single image (software load) is used on all machines.

      Annual trickle-down project to replace and move machines.

      Lots of good suggestions earlier on how to plan who gets what.
