What is the best server-based firewall?

We will be adding a server-based firewall to our network. I’d like to know how the speed of the firewall server may affect web-site performance. I’d also like to hear opinions on the best hardware/software combination.

I have a personal appreciation for GNAT Box. I worked with GNAT on a WAN with 500 users. This firewall sat on a Pentium 75Mhz with 64MB Ram and no HD. The cost was under 1,000. The GNAT Box now comes with hardware as a option.

Easy to install maintain and configure with HTML internface, you can access it from anywhere on your network. With the right configuration, it’s almost impossible to break it.

      Good luck!

I use a NT Server with Checkpoint’s Firewall-1 the Server is a Dell 1300 with 128 MB RAM and 3 9GB drives running a RAID 5 array. I monitored the effects it had on the WWW Servers and found no noticable difference. The software is fairly easy to setup.
Here is web site with a few good FAQs on Firewall 1 http://www.phoneboy.com.

      Hope that helps…..

I would have to recommend CheckPoint’s Firewall-1. Depending on the budget, running Firewall-1 on Nokia boxes. Very dependable and extremely fast and scalable.
