MMC is the Microsoft management Console and can be used to easily modify rules and policies on your local pc. First invoke MMC and then choose add/remove Snap-In from the file tab. Now choose add in the lower left corner which will list availabel snap-ins. From here you choose the snap-in to work with. Before you start making a lot of changing do your homework so you don't lockdown your system and make it unusable. It can be a lot of fun, but always make backups.

The mmc can be used to control almost every aspect of your computer. Here's a link to a tutorial (it was written for w2k but it applies to xp just the same). The tutorial is pretty basic but it would take a rather large book to cover everything that is available through the mmc.

Certain utilities like; services, computer management, performance, etc, are located in the mmc snapins. There are an abundance of utilities available for administration. Running mmc will allow you to create your own collection of management utilities to simplify your life when working with certain one all the time.

When you save the mmc, the default location is in the administrative tools - programs folder. I've used this often to put the console on my desktop when working with the 3 main active directory tools.
