What is waverun.exe?

By Guy West ·
A friend asked me what might be causing his XP box to be running extremely slow all of a sudden. One of the processes running and taking up a lot of CPU and memory is waverun.exe. Could this be the problem? What is it?
Box has 512 MB RAM.

Not familiar with that file, but here are some generic steps.

Search for file. When found, see where it is located. Folder location can often provide information, especially when located in Program Files.

Right click on file and select properties. Select Version tab under properties and see if a Company is listed. Most times a legitimate file will have name of company that created it.

Be suspicious of any file located in System or System32 folder that does not have a Company listed under properties.

Did you do the standard things first? Like remove unneeded programs, disk clean up, defrag and use check disk from disk tools? Then use a program like Window washer to do more clean up, always back up to cd's. If that dose not help use the restore cd's and reload. Or use the Microsoft OEM install cd and reload. A computer can become slugish after awhile because of software installs and registry entrys. The best way to get your speed back is a clean install. Trojans, virus and other things like this will slow a computer down.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. While I still don't know what waverun.exe is, adaware and spybot S & D found all kinds of adware and some malware too. Once this stuff was gone, box behaved like it should.
