What is Win XP Pro 64 bit

By wojnar ·
I thought Vista was the only 64 bit OS MS was going to offer (in 16 versions). I see there is a non-beta 64 bit Win XP Professional being offered by MS.

Does anyone have details on the difference between the 2 OS's or is the 64 bit XP Pro simply the Vista version for the enterprise ?

If it is truly 'Vista', why is it not beta ? If not, is it worth looking into ? Has anybody seen/used the 64 bit XP ?

There's a 32 bit Vista O/S in the same flavors as the 64 Bit. Most consumers aren't going to go out and dump their 2 year old 32 bit rigs just because Vista came out. They might decide to "upgrade" their O/S but not their hardware [well maybe add memory].

I understand the various flavors of Vista. However, MS has currently - on the market - a "64 bit Windows XP Professional" OS. It is identified on the microsoft website as a currently available 64 bit OS and is not identified as Vista or as a beta.

Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 have "x64" versions that run on AMD Athlon 64 and Intel EM64T. Intel's EM64T is copied from AMD's manual on Athlon 64. These Intel and AMD processors are hybrid and they run "x64" 32 and 64 bit code. Note that x64 is not to be confused with pure 64-bit only on the Itanium CPU. There are pure 64 bit Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 as well but they're a lot more rare.

Vista is in beta 2 right now and there are 32 bit and 32/64 x64 versions.

People do use x64 Windows XP but it's rare. You won't get any performance enhancement from it in most cases. 64 bit is very useful for scientific computing, and maybe some graphics stuff. The trick to getting x64 Windows to work is that you need to make sure all your hardware has x64 drivers.
