What program uses a particular service.

By BankITGuy ·
Is there a command or a piece of freeware that will tell me exactly what program is currently using MS SQL Service?

I've got a PC backup that hangs because a something has exclusive access to the running SQL Service on that PC.

As far as I can find... Nothing in any of the event logs that I can attribute to the situation. My automated backup routine just hangs because it can't backup the SQL Service because an application has exclusive access to it. It then presents an option to close the app and continue or skip the file.

Unfortunately, it's hard to automate this for users when it requires mid-backup input.

Which OS ???

WinXP will tell you a services dependencies....

Start --> Programs --> Administrative Tools --> Services

Right-click on the service --> Properties --> Dependecies tab

----

There are other programs (yes freeware) to run on other OSes. Check out PrcInfo at the below link:

Be sure to clik on the "click-here" for the download... or you'll be re-directed to the russian site this comes from.

The dependancy tab will likely indicate SQLServeragent as the only dependancy. Here is a link for software that I found very effective:

It's not free ($37US), but most things in life have a price.
