What Services Do I Need?

By rob.jones2 ·
I was wondering if anyone could help me? I set up a standalone Win2k file server for use by my department of 29 users. It will server as a file server and FTP server. No IIS. What services can I safely shut off? What services SHOULD I shut off for security purposes? Any suggestions??

Here is my opinion on this. Let these services run:
Alerter
COM+
DTC
DNS Client
Event Log
IPSec
Logical Disk Manager
Messenger
Net Logon
Network Connections
NT LM Security
P&P
Protected Storage
RPC
Removable Storage
RunAs
SAM
Server
System Event
Task Scheduler
TCP/IP NetBIOS
Telephony
all WMI services
Workstation

Everything else can be shut off safely.

Oh, and any application-level services too. Your FTP software, for example, probably sets up a service. But that is a given.

since you are going to run only ftp, you might also try using 3rd party ftp such as serv-u or warftp. IIS ftp is little limited.
