What the?

By Steven Lynas ·
Hi,

I'm running an AMD2200+, with 1GB RAM, 128MB GeForce Ti4200 and a 40GB 5200RPM, DSL Internet.

Whilst running Windows XP Pro, the computer Freezes. I;ve tried running the PC on two different DIMM's ie removing 512MB and swapping, doesn't work, keeps freezing. I'm at my wits end. What is wrong with my baby????

Do you have a way to check your cpu and case temperatures?
A lot of lock ups are heat related especially with the amd chips.
Better fans or another fan may be your answer.
Good Luck

1) Look at overheating issues here. Has this every worked properly before? If yes, what has changed?
2) Look at possible hdd issues. You have a current system with good speed, but your hdd is 5400 RPM not 7200 RPM? Scandisk/defrag?
3) Is ithanging after a set period of time, or when running a specific application?

What the?

I did have a 64MB GeForce 400MX and Upgraded to a 128MB card and added 512MB of RAM. The system will sometimes hang straight away on startup (as soon as you get to the XP login0 or it can run for hours then freeze suddenly. Which as you can imagine is a major pain in the a$$. I did originally think that the HDD was causing a sort of bottle neck, but at the moment, cannot afford it. One point I should mention is, sometimes the machine will not turn on. It get the lights and a dull sounding fan, but no power. I took the machine to bits, removed the ATX power supply from the connector on the Mainboard and found that there was a sort of scorch located around the 3.3v pin. Any ideas what may cause this??? Could the PSU be causing the system hangs?

Sounds like a video card issue to me. Try putting the old one back in and see if it works correctly. I put a 64MB GEForce 4 in a brand new Dell Precision Workstation 350. It booted the first time In installed it but never again. I unistalled it put old card in, no problem. Tried GEForce again, same thing. Dell said the both required the same voltage, they thought. Apparently not! Check voltage requirements.

Will try that. Although I'm thinking that it's more a motherboard problem, as there are scorch marks around the ATX power connector / psu cable
