What to back up??

By jredding ·
I am responsible for the backup of our 30+ NT/2000 servers. My data has grown quite drastically over the past year and my backup window is shrinking. I know I am backing up alot of unnecessary files. My question is, what are the necessary files?

What to back up??

Obviously, of primary concern is data files that are stored on the servers.

Is the network NT4 or Win2k / Active Directory based? If it is AD based, I would also backup the System State of the Win2K computers. This would backup all the AD-related information.

If the servers perform specific functions (i.e. SQL, Exchange, IIS, etc.), there are usually specific backup requirements for each.

If you have been in the habit of doing full back-ups every time you run a backup, you can decrease the amount of data being backed-up by decreasing the frequency of full backups and conducting incremental backups instead (Incremental back-ups only backup files that have been added or modified since the last full backup). This of course increases the number of good tapes required to do a restoration.

Hope this helps.
