WHAT TO DO?

by PENGUINSRULE In reply to WHAT TO DO?

Do everything you can to get real work experience, even if it's volunteer work.

Make some serious decisions about the path you want to go into. It looks like you have an assortment of skills. Do you want to do helpdesk? desktop support? applications programming? database administration? It sounds like you are more interested in applications. Think about the ways that you can set yourself apart from all the other people who have those same skills (often with much more experience).

The more mobile you are, the more likely you'll get work.

The more you expose yourself to different things, the better.

If you really want to be a good applications programmer, then you need really good skills with a number of different languages, good project management skills, good software design background, good database skills, etc.

It doesn't hurt to do contract or temporary work until you land where you want.

don't expect a super high paying job right out of school - it takes time of paying your dues before you get your big break. When I received my MS in Computer Science, I started on the helpdesk, and worked up. You don't want to stay on the helpdesk, but helpdesk work gives you valuable experience.

hope this helps.
