What to do when asked illegal questions in an interview

by mmtoler . Updated 16 years, 11 months ago

I know there are several illegal questions that employers are to avoid – due to the US Constitution guarantee of our rights, but I also know from both personal experience and first hand accounts from friends seeking new jobs or positions are routinely asked illegal questions. What can you do when you have been asked one of these questions and without thinking answer truthfully to then find out later you were not selected because the hiring person or interviewer obtained information from you which they used to discriminate against you? When people are interviewing for a job, they are nervous, anxious to get the job, and often just want to please the interviewer by showing they are friendly, courteous, open, and truthful. So it is only natural human behavior that we will answer these questions unless we feel offended – and sometimes even then. Many people are desperate for a job or promotion.
