What to monitor?

I am a new Administrator with one Nt server that has Exchange 5.5. Use the performance Monitor but I am not sure what to monitor.
What things should I monitor.

Exchange Server 5.5: Performance Monitoring allows you to use numerous tools to monitor Exchange Server and configure it for optimum performance.

Use Performance Monitor to track Exchange Server performance.

Monitor alerts and counters.

Create and use link monitors.

SNMP (simple network management protocol) Use it to monitor performance.

Optimize Exchange design.

Use Performance Optimizer.

Managing connectivity.

Optimizing Exchange Design:

Number of sites and site boundaries.

Intersite communications.

Amount of bandwidth.

Optimizing Individual Exchange Servers.
