What to use

By byteside ·
I have been told by others that they use wintenals administrator pack or ERD Commander for troubleshooting pcs. I run a pc repair shop and I thought something like that would be handy or put together my package of software to use. I noticed ERD commander and winternals admin pack is priced per workstation. I work on tons of computers and that kind of pricing will not work for me. So I am asking you all for some advice. What kind of programs do you use and what would be the easiest way to put together a package that I can use to boot a dead pc? Thanks for your input.

Kinda hard to boot a dead PC. If you want an inexpensive way to troubleshoot a "dead" PC, try Soyo Tech Aid POST Card. Costs less than $35.00 and does a reasonable job. Here's a link:

If that's not what you're looking for, define what you mean by a "dead" PC. I usually assume it to mean one that won't display POST progress on monitor.

There are a number of handy diagnostic programs, but they are require at least a basic boot into DOS.

Any Wintel mobo with a PCI slot as far as I know (I use one and on many different mobos).

Also look at Ultimate Boot CD. Has a lot of useful utilities on one bootable CD.

I was looking more at something like the 911 CD http://www.911cd.net or the BartPE http://www.maximumpc.com/how_to/reprint_2005-01-27.html
I do like the looks of the soyo pci card. Will it work on any board or just Soyo?
