what’s a good proxy server worth?

I’m curious to know if anyone who has administered proxy servers can attest to their value in a small networking environment.

Specifically what kind of performance improvement is possible with a proxy server in place? Does anyone know if a proprietary server such as Microsoft’s ISA server offers a significantly greater benefit in performance than an open source alternative such as Squid? Are there any trade-offs as the network grows?
