Whats going on with these 3COM NIC'S

By stuchele ·
I have three window 98 PC'S. All of which have experienced the same problem a number of times. The user will boot the PC and will not get the Novell login. I have tried to run ipconfig and get an error (I do not have the exact error) but placing another NIC in the PC fixes the problem. Today the same thing happened, I have saved all the previous NIC's marking them bad because I did not really think that they were, and have not had time to test them. I gave one of these to my co-worker to install and it worked fine! What is going on with these NIC's!!!!????

Are they from the group 3c905-tx, 3c905b-tx, 3c905b-txnm, etc?

If they are, and if you're using the driver that came with the product, you'll have problems.

If this is indeed the case, and you want a good driver, send me an email and I'll reply with an attachment containing the driver that will work.

i have also had problems and have updated my drivers to no avail. I am using the 3cc575bt. we have recently changed our switches from 10Mb/half Duplex to auto/auto. all the internal nics on my compaq m700 negotiated the change just fine but the 3coms are causing trouble. the network login on my 98 machines will not appear at boot up but when you log off a network logon screen will appear and work correctly. changing the ports back on the switch fixes the problem but i want to take advantage of the 100 part of the 10/100 cards when possible.

We had a problem with 3com 3C905B nics and ASUS motherboards running W95. The fix was to change to another brand of nic. In our case Intel. Problem solved.

I quit using 3C905B and later cards, the drivers suck! Try Netgear FA311/312, they set nicely and are dependable, stay away from cards with Realtec chipsets.
