What's going on with WINIPCFG?

By brian.stahl ·
Recently we have had random network problems with connecting to the Internet. A quick fix I have found is to run WINIPCFG then release and and renew all. After doing so, the next page will load instantly. This solution has worked for computers throughout the company, but not on a permanaent basis. I am tyring to use this as a starting point to figure out the core of the problem and don't know exactly happens on the server end if anything, that would cause the increased performance after running the command. Can someone explain? Thanks

What's going on with WINIPCFG?

Bstahl,

when you consider the process behind what you are doing there are clues that suggest that you most likely have name resolution problems.

a) winipcfg /release

drops your ip address and you have no default settings wins, dns etc)

b) winipcfg /renew

re-requests an ip address and re-assigns you the same ip in most circumstances. Importantly also resets your DNS and WINS information.

Question is are you using a proxy server? or going direct to the internet?

If you are using a proxy you should be making sure that you can reach the proxy by name and ip.

If you are going direct then you should make sure that your dns settings are pointing to your isp's settings and they probably have a proxy server setting with a specific port for your browser anyway (to make your surfing experience quicker).

Just keep in mind that winipcfg is not actually fixing the problem but kinda just wiping the slate clean ip-wise. The resolution to this will come in understanding how the win9x client talks to whoever is providing the link (isp or local proxy).

Hope this helps,

jb.

you are probably using a dhcp server, check on the server whats the lease time of a ip, the info may have expired.
while you are on the server check all the settings , scope, lease time, dns , etc to see if they are still correct.
Yould check the eventview if anything is noted there.

regards,

Leopold
