What's the advantage of using Class B?

By Panther007 ·
I am having to setup frame relay from one corporate location to 40 remote ones and I was told that there are certain advantages to using private Class B IP addresses rather than Class C IP addresses. What advantages can there be of doing this? It cant be growth since class C should be OK since I have only 40 remote locations. Any ideas? Would appreciate your input!

Thanks

What's the advantage of using Class B?

The Class C private IP range (192.168.x.x)only allows for a total of 254 computers (hosts) per subnet and a total of 254 subnets. You might be surprised how easy it is to burn up 254 IP addresses by the time you count all the workstations, printers, router interfaces, etc.

The Class B private IP range (172.16.0.0 through 172.31.255.255) allows 15 times those numbers.

So, yes, the reason could be growth. But REALLY big growth.

I think the thought is that there is no downside to thinking big at the start, but there is a definite downside to having to re-map a network when you outgrow it.

Routing will also be easier to understand.

Too much is far easier than too little.
