By jimimhim ·
Lots of free stuff out there, what's the best combination of anti-virus, anti-phishing, anti-malware?

You are right, there are a lot of free anti-virus sotwares out there..

You can pick and try them out, that is the best way for you.
Me i have McAFEE:
This is all in one, and it does me fine. It has its own un-installer, so if needed you can just un-install it and then re-apply it later. Plus you can have it on three computers, if you choose the all in one option on their website. But it is down to you to find out what you need.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

An unexpectedly stilted reply there ...

You could almost be mistaken for taking up the flag of our recently quiesced Oregonian, by ignoring the question and advising on a single, paid-for product, that many of TR would not use even as a substitute for toilet paper.

Mind you, at least you advised something - he advocated a zero-antivirus policy.

You can only judge by the numbers, as they are posted here ...

My own combination would run as follows (all free):

Antivirus: Avast, which downloads as a full trial for a month, with the option to reset to the slightly more limited free edition at the end of that period.

Anti-malware: Ad-Aware from Lavasoft, Spybot Search&Destroy (beware of imitations), CCleaner, Spyhunter3 Security Suite.

Wait for some more posts to appear and run up your own tally of what TR members favour - that way you will be able to chart the 'Best Of' series for yourself.

However, that in itself is of no value if you do not favour the frontends of these various programs yourself. Ultimately, the best program for ANY function, is one that is both effective in it's function and comfortable for you to use.

Oh - and FREE!! :)

My list changed recently.

If you had asked me a few months ago, I would have recommended AVG. But since they introduced 8.0, I've switched to Avast and wish I had a long time ago!

I also agree with OldMycroft and his Anti-Spyware/Malware/Adware choices.

I would add my two favorite tools for avoiding most of the garbage:
SpywareBlaster -
SpywareGuard -

and to quickly clean out the places where their installers usually hide before you shut down or reboot - ATF-Cleaner:

And last but certainly not least, I use ZoneAlarm Pro as my firewall.
