What's the best way to obtain clients?

By mason ·
I am considering starting my own network consulting company. I have read several books on the subject but cannot find any definative ideas on obtaining clients (ie, types of effective advertising, sales, etc). Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

What's the best way to obtain clients?

I have seen ads in local newspapers, local trade magazines and the like but that depends on your budget. If you haven't already, try setting up a web page with all of your qualifications and specializations. Make sure that the large search enginesare aware of your site. Also make sure that the smaller, more regional, search engines are aware. Network (socially) at local tech colleges and IT training sites. At the very least there may be a bulletin board to leave your card on.

The difficult part is finding that first client. Once that first one is found, and you do a good job, it is likely that you will be referred to other people.

Hope that helps,

Mason - As with any new product or service obtaining clients means winning clients away from other existing service (computer maintenance) providers. The best question you must have ready to answer is: What can you provide, over and above, that the existing provider is already offering?
With any businesss to get yourself in front of the accepting client will take communications, lots of it, and the expense that goes with it. An , attractive business card is a must. A presentation brochure isan excellent offering. Make personal calls to the Company's Computer Manager. Then phone back in 3 or 4 days. Successful Managers recognize motivation.
Have a Fee Schedule ready for presentation. And be ready to say what your response time is. Can you imagine an Insurance Company waiting 3 days untill you have time for them? Plan on 12-14 hours days at the onset. Remember your are competing with existing, experienced service providers.

An Afterthought - Yesterday I stopped into a computer maintenance and sales store that has a huge newspaper advertising budget. Within minutes of being in the store, in a high rent location, I knew they would never touch my equipment that I depend on. They were a bunch of highly skilled whiz kids playing computer fix games with the sheep that walked in. The chicken scratch price board reflected that minimum turn-around time on computers was 5 days. Who can wait 5 days? More Sheep?
The gig is,if a Company wants you it is because you can fit close to THEIR schedule. Being a computer tech does mean your are put in charge of a user's breathing tube, only their computer, which may be the breathing tube of the Company, and your hopeful client.
