What's the word on XP SP3?

By Tink! ·
Haven't seen a peep yet (knowing me, I could be missing it - if so, point me in the right direction please).

My computer at work is asking to install XP Service Pack 3. Which means the other PC's will be asking the same thing within a matter of time.

Just wondering if there are any bugs I should know about before I have the update installed.
Tink :)

I am going to take the leap today

by jdclyde In reply to What's the word on XP SP3 ...

I downloaded the service pack iso and will be making the disc in about an hour.

I will then try it out on my system (after I back up my data, of course).

From what I have heard, doing the auto update is not advisable.

I will post back tomorrow, if my system can, that is... B-)

HP With AMD

by TheChas In reply to What's the word on XP SP3 ...

So far, the major reported issue with XP SP3 is that some HP models with AMD processors attempt to install the Intel drivers and lock up.

My personal advice, download the network install version and install it locally rather than relying on the web install.

I have SP3 on my XP systems and have not had any problems.

It also affects one model of Acer NB's with Intel CPU's

They do the same thing and the cure is the same use method 3 on this M$ Knowledge Base Article and it cures any problems

I haven't had any major issues with it either and I don't expect problems now as SP3 has been out for a decent length of time. Doesn't seem like much of a Service Pack by M$ standards but just like always you should make sure that you have up to date working Backup's before applying.

But none the less get the Network Install version from M$ as it's not small enough to allow Auto Update to download for the network. It's available here

if you don't want to get notifications from the Auto Update you can install a Service Pack Blocking utility from M$ from here

The only other reports that I have heard about is some applications stop working after SP3 is applied but when this happens it just requires a reinstall of the Failed Application. I haven't personally had any problems like this though.

Installed SP3 weeks ago

by mjd420nova In reply to What's the word on XP SP3 ...

I installed SP3 the first time this system asked me to. It is an XP PRO full install, not an upgrade si I figures I'd let this system be the bench mark for the others. Worked fine and have not noticed any faults yet. None of my other systems have asked for permission yet but will not hesitate to install it when they do.
