I want to know what is the maximum speed in MHz/GHz that can be reached with silicon microprocessors and how many years from now will it be before we reach the dead end of Silicon alley?

all matter energy well retain its properties until the outer electrons loose or gain enough energy for transmutation up or below its place on the element chart. silicon life is directly proportional to COMBINATIONS OF purity and energy speed in MHZ/GHZ.
I personally think we're not far from the practical limits of silicon and any substantial future advances in computational density will come from either photonics or living molecules of one type or another.
Also, we're already seeing a trend towards distribution of processing as opposed to higher raw clock speeds and I expect that trend to continue and reduce the pressure to produce ever higher clock speeds. Silicon still has a lot of life in it and will certainly have a life span in the decades but using different strategies than those that have characterized the past 10 years.
I agree with Paul. It is hard to say the life span of silicon but the future holds some very promising technologies that will be used to shape the "pc" and all of it's pieces. Nanotechnology is very interesting to me as well as the idea of gettingrid of so many wires and such and using light as a mode of transportation for data.
I think that Silicon will play a part for many years to come although it's role may change...
