When is it time to buy new hardware?

By TobeJ ·
Hi there,

We are running mostly HP LH3 server raid L 5
with twin processors... we recently had a problem with one of the servers, which luckly I had an extra main board on site to fix the problem. My question is this the server are now over 3 years old, should I be thinking about replacing the servers next year? the warranty has run out nd I need to renew... what is the general rule of thumb?

Should I replace after 3 years / 4 years / 5 years even 6?

Thanks

Toby...

When is it time to buy new hardware?

The Gartner Group currently recommends 4 years for workstations and 3 years for power users/servers. Check resource T-14-5378 Desktop Recommendations, and T-13-8045 Desktop PC Life.

That said, a lot of this depends on your utilization, archiving and maintenance. If these are mission critical servers and their failure would be harmful (more than inconvenient), then I would have to say replace them.

If you keep good, current backups, the data is not as critical, a little downtime on them is acceptable and they are not high-utilization you may be able to get more service out of them...perhaps even years.

You know what data is there and how important it is to your company. IBM used to say "No one ever got fired for buying IBM"....in this case I say "No one ever got fired for ensuring that the servers stayed up and ran stable". Know what I mean?

You may be able to take the old servers and use them as backups or in less important roles...test boxes and the like. That way you continue to get use and value from them but aren't risking a mission-critical failure.

Good luck...hope this helps.

Sound like a good rule of thumb...

I agree with Alpha Male. Your current servers should you replace them, could also server the purpose of being a backup server should your "new" equipment fail. I would add that it never hurts to have spare parts around to replace failing parts in your network. Hopes this helps.
