When users blame it on the tech

by dcvelbar . Updated 17 years, 3 months ago

ok.. so about 2 months ago i dropped by a friends place because her house guest could not log on to her wireless, after looking at it i reinstalled the driver and updated it. it still did not pick up the net work but it was late and i was tired and did not look harder at it. a week later the guest calls me and asks me to come over and take a look at it because now her lan is not working and the wireless is not either. so i go because i figure i might as well help out now keep in mind im not getting paid for this, but i like helping people. so i get there and she has a static ip 10.12.x.x in the lan settings but i can change it and the wireless option fields are all grayed out. so i try to run sfc and uninstall both lan and wireless and run a virus scan but it does not fix the problem so i tell her to reformat and be done with it ( she should have back up right.) so fast forward 2 months and i get this

“I just wanted to ask if it would be possible for you to give me the 50 dollars that it cost me to get my computer fixed, since whatever you did to it completely killed my internet. I know you said all you did was reinstall the drivers, and that would have been all fine and well, had you done it right. But whatever you did set my internet to one ip address, and would not let anyone else change it at all. I had to get windows reinstalled to fix the problem, which cost me 50.
It would be greatly appreciated if you gave it to me. Thanks.”

now i tell her that it was not working before and that i did not cause her problem

and she says this

Ok, so that’s why everything you told me was wrong with it, I told tech here, and they still couldn’t fix it? The Fact STILL remains that my computer worked perfectly fucking fine before you did WHATEVER the hell it was you did. Afterward it was totally fucked and nothing worked right.People make mistakes, including your almighty “tech support.” I highly fucking doubt that was a coincidence. It’s not like I can take anything you say seriously though, because you can barely speak the English language. Jesus. This problem could have been resolved easily, by you admitting you made a mistake. I also can’t take such brilliant advice from an unemployed tech support. You obviously weren’t doing something right.”

now i have 3 bachelor degrees in network, electrical, and computer engineering. and have worked as a consultant for discover chase and verizon. but becasue i tried to help and she decided not to reformat her self but rather took it some were to have it done i get blamed. now my question to any one who wants to talk to me is does this happen a lot, im used to it with customers and employees that call in or stop by help desks but some one your doing a favor for …
