    Where are AOL files?

I like to backup my work from the c-drive. I occasionally have to reload my system. Nothing new here. Where can I find the files that store AOL File Cabinet? I would like to back-up and restore the saved e-mail I keep there. I cannot identify the files involved. Is there a special method to doing this?

AOL uses a specialized database approach that handles things a bit strangely. It tends to mix data from various areas in one file and use table files to reference and locate the information.

The most effective way to protect yourself is to make a complete backup of the Organize folder found in the AmericaOnline5.0 or 6.0 directory. This folder contains the information relative to each screenname and the subsequent contents for email, favorites, and such. On AOL 6.0 the address book and buddy list are maintained on AOL servers and replicated to the client machine with each session.

If email for a specific screenname is all you want to save then you can also narrow your save to opening the Filing cabinet in AOL, highlight the folderyou wish to save, most complete is mail, and then right click to save as. Then give it a name like july2001mail and it will create the pfc file needed for later use.

Note that the pfc file is designed to be opened in the AOL software and havent found any other program that does an effective job of it. However, you do not need to be online to view it simply have AOL open and click file, point to the saved pfc and it will open it.

If you need more information send email and I will be glad to assist. Hope this helps.
