Where Are Users Authenticating

By mross5 ·
Other than setting Audit Policies in User Manager and using Event Viewer is there any other way to tell if users are authenticating on a particular BDC? Also, is there a direct correlation between which BDC provides authentication first and the CPU power of that BDC? Thanks - M.Ross

I beleive that there is a Kixtart variable that you can examine to tell you the login server - this is the BDC that authenticated the user.

Are you asking if the BDC with the strongest CPU will be the one to authenticate first? The answer is NO. The first BDC to authenticate will be the one that gets the request and responds first - ie the one with the best network link between it and the client.

Run a few network monitor sessions of users logging on and you will see how it works...

If the users are on NT you can use WINMSD. Click start, run then type WINMSD. Then click the network tab.
That will tell you which BDC authenticated them.

To tackle the program another way. You can control which DC users logon with a SETPRFDC command.
Search Technet for Setprfdc for more details.
