What is the quickest way to find a computer name and IP without actually touching the client? Thanks for your help.

If you were running DHCP, go to DHCPP console, click it, in the dropdown folder look for Address Leases. On the right pane you will see the different computers in the network with their respective IP leased addresses.

If you want to do it ad hoc interactively, I can't help you. If you can have all the machines run a survey app as part of a login script, I have an app I wrote which queries the local registry and writes this info to a central file. It's low-tech but it works. Let me know if this is of interest.

How do I do it?

You need to know something about the computer in order to connect to it. I reference the fact that it is always the same users on the computers. I do a query in WINS to find out who sits on which machine. I can then get the IP and COmputer name from the results.

What information do you hold regarding the client.

You need to know either the IP or the computername to get some information.

From the command prompt.

NBTSTAT -a ipaddress
or NTBSTAT -A computername.

Gives a raft of information.

I would assume that everyone is running on the same subnet... if you know what subnet you want to scan for, it could be quite easy:

Run Advanced IP Scanner from here: http://www.radmin.com/products/famatech_nu/default.html (remove any spaces before you paste)

Make sure that you click on 'Options'> 'IP Scan' and select 'resolve NetBIOS information during scan' -
