Where do i start in order to develope USSD Applications?

By muzjosh ·
I am a developer of SMS Applications. Of recent, a friend told me about USSD Protocol. I need to know where i can get more information on it. Are there any development tools or simulators for USSD?

When it comes to integration to external functionality, USSD servers are less standardized than SMS-centers.

Funnily enough, some USSD-gateways also use the SMPP protocol for interaction with content providers.

But, first of all, before doing any development, you should contact those network operators, you want to target, to learn if and how it is possible to integrate any services towards their customers.

Many operators already have their own "USSD-portals" and would only allow you to connect (probably via some kind of web services) to their portal, rather than directly to the network.

There are a couple of really good reasons for this:
1. If charging is needed, then that taks probably already solved in their portal.
2. The numbering space is limited. There are only 50 codes that route the right way, to the home network. (Codes above 150 stay with the VLR, and won't work correctly when the customer is roaming outside his home network.)

This about how much I can say in an open forum like this. Contact me via a private message if you want to dig a bit deeper.
