Where's the memory?

By devin.ellis ·
Anyone know why Novell 5.1 would only see 64 MB of RAM when there is 256 installed? (Windows sees 256).

First, ensure that your system BIOS sees all the memory. Depending on the type of memory and the type of system there is no set answer to this. Ensure that the memory sticks match. Try other memory sticks. Update your BIOS. Why are you saying that Windows sees 256? Are you installing Netware over Windows? Did this machine have Windows on it before?

This is a Novell install over NT at a school lab. The last installation attempt of Server took 47 hours, so they finally decided to spring for some memory. Memory was installed, ECSD updated, Windows recognized 256, but Novell says there's only 64.

Do a clean install by using the NW5.1 cdrom. Place it into the CD drive and set the BIOS to have that drive be your first boot option. When it asks if you want to create a new partition, say yes and follow the prompts about rebooting, etc.

If windows used to be on the drive, the windows boot loader may still be there. This will remove it. Also, do not use a Win95 or Win98 boot disk to create a DOS partition onto the drive. It install several files to protect windows long file names. This will cause much problem for the server later, if you manage to even get the install to run.

Those files may be causing the memory problems along with any files loaded into hi memory by a memory manager, or extended memory.

I'm not sure why it doesn't see everything, but I'm sure you can make the server see it.

The command to use is "register memory", and I suggest you look it up on line on http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/nw5/usreflib/utlrfenu/data/he9237p6.html (remove any spaces in the URL if you see any), because it is with some hex calculations, and the on-line examples cover what you need.

Once registered, you cannot "unregister", but I'm afraid you'll have to repeat it every time your server starts, so don't forget to put the right syntax in your autoexec.ncf.

Are you using MS-DOS for booting?

If so, change it, because it will only support up to 64MB.

Use the DOS that came with the NetWare CD by booting from it.

Cheers.

make sure you don't have himem.sys or emm386 in your config.sys.. you don't need to reinstall.
