Which Controller Card to Use?

By DouglasB ·
I have a dell tower, using Rambus 800 memory. The built in motherboard hard driver controller both went out. I inserted an ATA100 controller card and now the machine runs slower than heck. I am assuming I need to match the controller card to the bus speed of the motherboard? I believe the bus speed on this board is 100, any ideas?

Disable on-board controllers.

Load driver for add-in board, if you have not already done so.

PCI bus is 33MHz period. No ATA hard disk will exceed transfer rate of a properly operating ATA 100 controller.

Promise cards usually work well.

Going into BIOS setup it appears that the onboard controllers are not recognized. Is this the same as disabling them, since there is not an option to disable in BIOS? Thanks for the post.

Dalton is correct in his answer.

Usually in the on-board or peripheral setting section of the BIOS there is an option to disable the on board IDE controllers.

I am going to suggest that your slow performance has nothing to do with your ATA 100 controller card.
Instead, I suspect that whatever took out the on board IDE controller (E.S.D.?) has damaged more than just the IDE controller.
If my guess is right, you will see continually degrading system performance.

Alternately, the on board IDE controller might have a frozen data line that is hanging the system bus.

If there is a frozen data line on the on-board controller, is that fixable? My guess is that your suggestion (Chas)that the board suffered several problems is correct.
