Which degree?

By debbie ·
Well I've taken a few certifications and I'm gaining more experience with my own business... however I want to finish my degree. Which degree is more respected, carries clout...a BS Computer Science or BS in Computer Information Systems?
I have todecide in the next few days as none of the classes cross over between the majors.
Thanks.

Which degree?

by maxwell edison In reply to Which degree?

Greetings,

Computer Information Systems would be my choice. It covers a wider range of overall issues, and could be applied in more areas. I would also throw into the loop - if at all possible - an MBA. With those kinds of credentials you could easily set your sights on CTO or CIO and become a major player in some company and/or industry.

(With the benefit of hindsight, and if I were 20 years younger, that's what I'd do.)

Best of luck,

Maxwell

P.S

Just another thought (or perhaps a little side note).

A degree won't guarantee a successful future (define success however you'd like), nor will the lack of a degree prevent it. But I'm sure you know that already.

What do Steve Jobs (Apple Computer), Larry Ellison (Oracle), and Bill Gates (Microsoft) all have in common?

All 3 dropped out of college to pursue their real dreams.

Regards,

Maxwell

I too like the idea of sliding into a MBA...I've been going to college off and on for way too many years... Heck I wish I was 25 years younger... but I'm going for it anyway. Thanks so much for taking your time to give me such valuable input.

The only reason to do COmputer Sciences, is if you only need to do a specific, math related subject. CIS is a broad based subject. I would recommend CIS. Another good idea is to do a Diploma in IT and then it gives you a good idea on what you cando.

Thanks so much for taking the time to give me your input. My school doesn't have an IT degree, but I'll ask my advisor about it when I meet him tomorrow.

As in the two previous answers, I would say to go with the Information Systems degree. You said that you already have some certifications which means you are probably working in a networked environment and CIS would be good towards that. I would also take a few courses that would be normally geared toward a Business major since you said that you're in your own business. You sound very bright. I think that any degree you get would be highly valuable. A friend of mine once told me that the only thing no one can take away from you no matter how bad the economy gets is a college degree. How true. Once earned, it's still yours even after all your stocks have crashed!!
:-) Best wishes and good luck to you!

Thanks so much for the reinforcement. I'm leaning towards the CIS but wondered how it was viewed by experts.
Thanks again for your time and input.
