Which Firewall is Best?

By sherry_stuart ·
This is kind of a personal opinion question but I am at a stand still on which one to use. I am a Norton Utilities user and can't do without it. I purchased a McAfee Firewall and found it is not capatible with Norton so I decided that I should purchase the much more expensive Norton Personal Firewall. After reading reviews I found that most people suggest using Zone Alarm Firewall instead. My understanding is that free software is easier to hack because people can get it and tear it apart more easily. Which firewall is best for me to be using?

Sorry the points aren't much, but I want to be able to give everyone some for their opinion. Thanks. Sherry

A side comment, the total points get split among the accepted answers. So, 25 points with 5 accepted responses = 5 points per.

There are 2 versions of Zone Alarm.
The free download version for personal use.
And, Zone Alarm Pro for commercial use.

For virus and firewall software, I look at Norton and McAfee as a teeter-totter act. They go back and forth as to which one is best at any given moment. Neither ever really at the top of the heap. (The last review I read on Virus scanners picked Panda as the best)

It makes no difference, from a hacking perspective, whether software is freeware or commercial. What the hackers look for is "holes" in the software.
Most holes come from patching code from multiple programmers together. So, one could argue that "freeware" may have fewer holes than commercial software.
The hackers get ahold of, and disect the commercial packages as soon as a new release is out. From a "prestige" standpoint, they prefer to crack commercial releasesover freeware.

The other factor, is how thouroughly has the software been tested.
The better the testing, the fewer holes left for hackers to exploit.

I don't know how it rates these days, but there is another commercial option. Black Ice Defender.
When it was introduced, it was on the top of the heap.

I use ZoneAlarm Pro Version 3.0.091 which is the latest version. You can download ZA Pro V 3.0.081 for a free 30 day trial.

I've used the Pro version for 2yrs & won't give it up for nobody. One of the biggest pluses over all other firewalls is that it not only stops incoming intrusions but it's the only one I'm aware of that stops outgoing internet access. I should add it tells you what programs on your computer are trying to access the internet & gives you the option to allow them or block them.
Of course Norton & all the others don't want you to have this option so they don't feature it. Kind of makes you wonder why doesn't it.
